This year - maybe.
Seeing as Beta 2 still hasn't really been released.. I am not holding my breath.
What was the wording for the release today.. Oh yeah..
"This build is not beta quality but is being provided as a preview of our progress towards Beta 2."
I could have sworn I was expecting Beta 2 in January.. February maybe. *grin*
Ah well - I can wait.

Looking at this latest release I would say it looks like sometime in the 1st or 2nd quarter of next year. Even this new 5308 seems to be more of a refined Alpha release if I compare the 1st Alpha to all the ones(releases) up to today's 5308

I have to agree with you, Peter. I see some differences between 5308 and

5270, but it is still very rough. It would be foolish of MS to rush it out the door instead of taking the time necessary.

From what I see on this new build I doubt it very much . At the present time I am not holding my hopes (which is not big) that even the RTM will be ready at all this year, Good hopes sometimes fade very fast when it comes to a new release. This I learned over time and the only thing that I again will say out of experience is that looking at this release it is still a very far way off from RTM or even Gold
So do not hold your hopes up ,just ride the wave

The most reliable OS till now -Windows XP- is going to be the most used ,I think ,because even when Vista will be released , it will probably cost more than XP and because Vista will be new and can't be so reliable like the previous XP.

I differ from that. I used XP until I installed W2K3. My opinion is that W2K3 is a heck of a lot more reliable and stable. But again this is my opinion

"Panda_man" wrote in message Thank you people. I know the release will not be soon but just asked because these days I see everywhere (many sites) what Vista has /has not ...bla-bla-bla...
The most reliable OS till now -Windows XP- is going to be the most used ,I think ,because even when Vista will be released , it will probably cost more than XP and because Vista will be new and can't be so reliable like the previous XP.
No matter , thanks again !

actually, even if MS Marketing knew the release date they wouldn't tell you because there is a constest about guessing the release date.

For the past year I've been using Windows 2003 on my desktop and my laptop. Right now only on my laptop though, as I've switch the desktop to XP. Windows 2003 is better - smoother - more reliable - even its version of MSIE is better.
Windows Server is not "just XP". The code base was split for Server and the Microsoft guys spent a year pouring over it. It's better code.

Agreed, Server 2003 is no more reliable than XP in Workgroup mode, all they did was applied the latest update fixes and turned off some of the bells and whistles.

Cost of Server 2003 here in UK - 364 Cost of XP Pro Retail Upgrade 127
Is it REALLY worth paying three times as much for something that certainly is NOT three times better? Or have you got it just to brag to your mates?

Yes, it is expensive via retail. But for a guy who has a bit of money the couple hundred pounds won't be noticed and why not? It's a better OS and anything of consequence will run on it. I got it via my MSDN subscription because I do coding (and bought the subscription which enables access to Visual Studio and the operating systems .. including server 2003). I settled on it for my laptop - works great - and usually for my principle desktop - although this past week I decided to switch to XP for a while. I have 2003 running my other two desktops though.
Anyone who runs it as a desktop usually finds they like it better than Windows XP. Heck, even the default desktop is better.

I have installed Vista and cannot get it to accept internet pages. Even msn.com is not accepted. It shows the coonection but fails to load. Downlaods from updates loaded ok though. What setting is not allowing me access. I can also ping all neccesary gateways and servers ok

Are you using a router?
If so, go into the router's settings and look for Firewall settings- it may be listed as "Firewall" or SPI. You still have some good protection being behind the router because of NAT.
Depending on your router. 192.168.1.1 , 192.168.2.1 typed into IE's address bar, should get you to the settings. Your router will have to restart.

In case I wasn't very clear- *Disable* the firewall or SPI (stateful packet inspection) in your router's settings.

does windows vista stops working after 30 days of using it? like if it was a trial software

You may not be able to upgrade your installation of Windows Vista Beta 2 (or RC1) to the final, commercially available edition of Windows Vista. To upgrade you will need to acquire the final edition of Windows Vista and you may have to do a clean installation. Time-limited software.

Windows Vista Beta 2 (and RC1) is time-limited, pre-release software that will expire on June 1, 2007.

Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run > type in winver and you will see when your copy expires. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

how much is microsoft expecting to sell this "product" for?

Apparently about $10.00 more than you are willing to pay.
"dann" wrote in message how much is microsoft expecting to sell this "product" for?

About the same as XP. Microsoft has not released pricing.
"dann" wrote in message

looks like they will have many sku: vista basic. consumer, enterprise, premiere, and possibly multimedia. so pricing will be different, the basic with scaled back feature is targeted for low end PC for price sensitive regions of the world and not expected in Americas. how much, they have not been release like Colin said

Your names are somewhat wrong. Please review the Vista Editions site. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/editions/default.mspx
All the scoop about Vista is on the...well...Vista site, guys. You don't need to guess or try to remember what that other post said five days ago. The Vista site is your friend.
